…and we’re back.
In effort to placate my Canadian readership, here’s an update on the whole router situation. I realize that 99% of you don’t care.
Wow, I should have replaced my router months ago. Not only can I upload stuff again, but the improvement in downstream speed is impressive as well. I feel like I’m cruising the information superhighway in a comfortably accessorized high-end sedan as opposed to the doorless Pinto I had limping down the off-ramp last week.
I decided to replace my old Netgear WGR614 with… a new Netgear WGR614!
Why? There were a couple of reasons:
- When I went into Best Buy on Friday, they actually had it for the exact same price that Newegg did online. (I know.) It was the cheapest brand-name 802.11g around and since I had a Best Buy gift card left over from the holidays, I was able to sneak out of there for less than $20.
- My previous Netgear router worked 24-7 for four years. I’m satisfied with that kind of return on investment.
- I don’t have any 802.11n-capable devices, so there wasn’t really any need to spend the extra dough for a n-router this time.
- Sheer laziness. I already knew how to use this one.
I did make one important change, though. Instead of using the horizontal configuration like I did with R1, I’m going with the infinitely more exciting vertical configuration for R2.
