The Linkage for January 11th

Here’s a quick look at what I was reading online from January 5th to January 11th.

Hard-core ski bum still sticking it to The Man behind bars
Charlie Toups is Colorado’s ultimate ski bum and a relic of a fading era. Since 1976, the 63-year-old has skied 120 days a season, shoveling snow and doing other odd jobs for a few bucks and skiing every day, but now he’s in the slammer.

There, I fixed it.
What if, instead of being a mulleted genius, MacGyver had been a really dumb guy with too much time on his hands? He’d create the “solutions” you find on this site.

An unidentified hacker briefly hijacked Spain’s EU presidency website and replaced a picture of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero with one of Mr. Bean. I, of course, totally approve.

With five more hours to fill on its schedule after the canning Jay Leno’s primetime show, NBC announced that it’s ordering pilots for a whole slew of unoriginal shows that rip off popular movies, successful overseas shows and things your parents watched. This is why you don’t go sticking things where they don’t belong
Seeing an article about yourself in the paper can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes, it’s a REALLY bad thing. I bet this guy is relieved they didn’t run his name in the article.

The space shuttle program is on its way out, but the core of people who built and maintained it will live on. To honor them, NASA gave its employees the chance to design the patch that will commemorate the shuttle program, which is slated to end in September, after STS-133 flies.

Brownsville bans plastic shopping bags
Five years ago, people would look at you like you were crazy if you brought your own bags into a store. Starting in 2011, the city of Brownsville is banning plastic store bags and they’ve got major retailers on board with the change. Amazing how far we’ve come in such a short time.

Wayne State’s new scoreboard isn’t as historic as they thought
There were lots of headlines when it was announced that the left-field scoreboard from now-demolished Tiger Stadium had been installed at Wayne State University’s home field, but it appears that the scoreboard may have only been a few years old (instead of nearly 50 as the school initially thought).
