The Linkage for October 23rd

Here’s a quick look at what I was reading online from October 14th to October 23rd.

NASA review panel says go big or go home
The Augustine commission’s report is in and “the premier finding is that the human spaceflight program that the United States is currently pursuing is on an unsustainable trajectory.” Who’da thunk that setting high goals and then not providing enough funding wasn’t a successful strategy? Will this be the catalyst for finally transforming manned space efforts from government-run monopolies into wide-open commercial endeavors? Or it will be used as an excuse to effectively end U.S. manned space exploration?

This is going to look bad on your next performance review
After a Northwest flight from San Diego to Minneapolis overshot its destination airport by about 150 miles, federal investigators are looking into whether the pilots had become distracted, as they claimed, or perhaps fallen asleep.

Looking for a little blue in a sea of red
Texas Monthly sent a writer out to King County in north Texas (allegedly the reddest county in the United States) with a single task: find a Democrat.

Video: Every single Kramer entrance in chronological order
How many different ways can you walk through the same door over the course of nine years? If you’ve got 6 minutes, you can find out. Interesting how the entrance evolved over the years from an abrupt but relatively normal stride into the famous slide-step maneuver we all now associated with the character.

Giant hot-dog stand battles dumpster-diving bears
For the bears around Bailey, 40 miles southwest of Denver, the choice of wild berries and tree bark or a trip to the trash bin behind the Coney Island hot-dog stand — where they can gorge on bags full of half-eaten hot dogs, hamburgers and ice-cream cones — is apparently a no-brainer.

East Texas school district picks conformity over compassion
What a wasted opportunity to provide their students with a real-life example of generosity, compassion and civic duty. The older I get, the less I value dress codes in general. Honestly, I’d much rather see the school district grant an exemption to any student who’d be willing to do the same thing that this boy wants to do.
