The Linkage for Apr. 15th

Here’s a quick look at what I was reading online from Apr. 6th to Apr. 15th:

GM, Segway create world’s dorkiest transportation device
It reaches blazing speeds of up to 35 mph and can travel up to an hour on a single charge. Plus it looks like a something your drunk buddies made out of some PVC pipe, a La-Z Boy and an old lawn mower. With the all the business acumen of Segway and General Motors behind it, the PUMA is certain to be the way our children will travel in the future.

Friedman hopes Texas Dems are feeling a little Kinky
The 2010 gubernatorial slugfest between Gov. Perry and Sen. Hutchison just got what it needed – a little comic relief. Singer, humorist and self-proclaimed "Jewish cowboy" Kinky Friedman, who ran for governor as an independent in 2006, has taken his first steps towards running again as a Democrat. He can't do any worse than any of the folks the Dems have trotted out the last three times.

Woman picks up dinner at the hospital
I don't care what it is or what other cultures embrace. My policy is that humans, things inside humans and things that come out of humans are all off-limits for lunch. And I would think that the baby you're holding would be enough to mark the transition from pregnancy to motherhood.

Woman lives with bullet in cheek for 12 years
I know the doctor told her the bullet had gone through cleanly, but I think you'd still be able to tell if an inch-long piece of metal was stuck in your cheek. Might have been time for a second opinion.

Texas state rep apparently isn’t worried about courting the Asian vote
Betty Brown, a Republican state representative, is understandably taking some heat for having said that voters of Asian descent should adopt names that are "easier for Americans to deal with."

Placenta eating feels like cannibalism to me.

It’s all about context. Betty Brown just wants them to pick a name for all their documents to match, I don’t see the problem with that request.

I agree with you about the need for consistency across documents, but Brown’s comments weren’t focused on that. Her exact quotes from the committee testimony exchange:

“Rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language — do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here?”

    and:

“Can’t you see that this is something that would make it a lot easier for you and the people who are poll workers if you could adopt a name just for identification purposes that’s easier for Americans to deal with?”

As someone with an Eastern European last name and with some family members whose first names that make it sound like they just got off the boat themselves, I find it offensive that American citizens would be asked to abandon their heritage and adopt an “American name” just so they can exercise the right to vote.

Why not focus on the fact that we’re allowing people to put fake names on driver’s licenses?
