X marks the spot

This past week, the American Bandmasters Association Convention was held here in town and apparently I wasn’t invited. (I know!) Anyway, to cap off that crazy shindig, the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band performed at Kyle Field this weekend and the show was open to the general mere mortal non-bandmaster public as well.

Since The Boy’s favorite part of the two football games he’s been to has been halftime, I figured this would be perfect for him. It was like halftime without having to sit (or stand) through the first half. The free admission didn’t hurt either.

The band's all hereSo we trekked up to campus on Saturday and met up with a co-worker and her family to watch the big show. After some impatient waiting, the band finally showed up, did their thing and The Boy pronounced it, “pretty good.” He’s now focusing on a career as a bass drum player in a marching band.

Then we stopped by Sonic on the way home and got ice cream, which earned a “very delicious” from The Boy. Later that night, having dinner at a friend’s house was “very nice” and his bath was “warm but not too hot.” He generally gives everything two thumbs up.

Here’s a pair of brief videos from the show that my fellow Aggies will appreciate. The first one shows the band completing a four-way cross through (and The Boy noting at the penultimate moment that “X marks the spot”) and the second one shows the standard Block T that ends every show. If moving pictures scare you, there’s a collection of still images for you to look at as well.

If marching bands aren’t your thing, then I guess you’re out of luck today.

A second generation marching band member in the making!

interesting that his favorite part of the game is half-time, since both parents were involved in half-time shows during HS :)

I was waiting for a crash in the 4 way cross through with all the tubas…probably only happens during practice though.

Technically, The Boy will be a third-generation marching band member. My dad played trumpet at B’wood back in the day.
