Gimme some candy!

I honestly can’t remember if I ever got worked up about my Halloween costumes as a kid. Looking back at what I was, probably not. I can remember being a football player, a fencer, and a die (you know, the kind you shoot at a craps table or in a high-stakes game of Yahtzee!). Since that only accounts for three Halloweens, I’m guessing the other costumes weren’t particularly outstanding.

This year will mark our seventh Halloween with a little person of our own to dress up goofily. In fact, this year we’ve even got a second little person to deck out. I’ll catch you up on their costumes for this year tomorrow, but here’s a retrospective of The Boy’s first six Halloween costumes.

Before we begin, I must acknowledge that The Boy has never really expressed any kind of active interest in picking out his own costumes. In fact, he volunteered to recycle last year’s outfit for use again this year. (We told him that wasn’t necessary.) So everything you see below is pretty much The Wife’s doing.

For his very first Halloween, when he was just 1½ months old, The Boy was a pea in a pod. This was probably the easiest Halloween ever – we didn’t go anywhere and just sat at home giving out candy.

Halloween 2002

In 2003, The Boy was a dragon. I’ll admit that I didn’t care for this one at first, but I really liked it once he actually put it on.

Halloween 2003

In 2004, we celebrated our first Halloween back in College Station by dressing up him as an Aggie Yell Leader. This is still my favorite costume. It was the only homemade one we’ve done so far and he was at just the right age to be exceedingly cute in it.

Halloween 2004

In 2005, The Boy put on his scrubs and went trick-or-treating as a doctor. His outfit was enhanced by a surgical cap, some gloves and handful of tongue depressors donated by his pediatrician.

Halloween 2005

In 2006, The Boy donned a nuclear orange jumpsuit for duty as an astronaut. Actually, if it hadn’t been for that headset, he also could have passed for Joel from MST3K. That would have been cool.

Halloween 2006

In 2007, The Boy became a junior firefighter. Accordingly, he got a ton of candy from the real-life firefighter who lived on our street.

Halloween 2007

So what will he be this year? A baseball player? A pirate? Cap’n Crunch? Mr. T? René Descartes? And what about The Girl? What kind of costumes do they make for people who are 2’4″? To find out, check back on Saturday.

The dragon and the yell leader are definitely my two favorites. In fact, I love that dragon so much that baby girl might need to wear it next year.

Great post. Although, I was a little disappointed that when I clicked on the link for “a die”, I wasn’t shown a picture of you dressed as one!! Have a great Halloween!!!

Last weekend my mother gave me a box of old pictures (2 shoeboxes FULL.) I will now be scouring them looking to find pictures of you in costume. I know I already found several of you in 7th grade.

I remember being Ronald Reagan one year during middle school, but I can’t remember which year it was. I’m still drawing a blank for all the other Halloweens.

I need to start going through all of my old photos before I forget who’s who and what’s what in them. Stupid middle aged brain.
