The Linkage for Oct. 6th

Here’s a quick look at what I was reading online from Sep. 26th to Oct. 6th:

Video: What are you doing here?
Tags: video funny doctor_who
How many times can you ask the same question over the course of 45 years? Quite a few, as the writers of Doctor Who have demonstrated.

Ike drops big fossil in man’s yard
Tags: texas weather history animals weird
One guy came home to discover something unexpected amidst all of the storm left behind by Hurricane Ike – a six-pound fossilized mammoth tooth.

Robbers take mail at gunpoint
Tags: clute stupid crime
The post office? Really? Is this the 1880s? Who robs a post office? For a bag of mail? I’m guessing they had put something in the mail by accident and didn’t want it to get sent out.

Back to the future on the gridiron
Tags: technology history football broncos system:filetype:jpg system:media:image
Think helmet cams are a new fancy-dan technology foisted upon us by Fox and ESPN? Think again. This photo shows Broncos QB Jacky Lee sporting a “newfangled HelmetCam” over forty years ago! There’s no way you could actually play football wearing that contraption.

Army, Sears clothing deal irks lawmakers
Tags: business government army
Ladies and gentlemen, badges and military insigna that once had to be earned will soon be on sale for every angst-ridden teenager to buy at their local Sears. I’m not sure who thought this was a good idea.

Five years after their first manned space flight, the Chinese successfully completed their first space walk.

Shea goodbye to the Mets’ longtime home
Tags: baseball history mets stadiums
A loving look back at the New York’s other stadium that’s closing its doors this season – Shea Stadium. Not quite as historic or iconic as Yankee Stadium, but definitely a place that will be missed by some.

Eyes of Texas creator Ray Miller dies

Probably no one did as much for the advancement of Texas history and popular culture in the past half-decade as Ray Miller.

Oops… McCain claims debate victory a bit too quickly
Tags: politics advertising republicans 2008_election
In news that no doubt resulted in some low-level intern getting sacked, the McCain campaign (presumably) accidentally started running online ads claiming that the candidate had won the first presidential debate – hours before the debate was scheduled to take place and before his campaign would even commit to McCain showing up at all.

Art with LEGO bricks

Holy crap. This guy does amazing things with LEGOs. And since we all know that I have a serious LEGO art obsession…

Japanese invent airbags for old people
Tags: japan health technology funny
A Japanese company says it has made an airbag designed to stop elderly people injuring themselves by falling over. So if you’re cool with the whole wearing-a-dorky-airbag-system-on-your-back-all-the-time thing, you can still maintain that sense of independence in your golden years.

Swiss guy rockets himself over the English Channel
Tags: technology uk france switzerland
It’s so advanced that I wouldn’t exactly call his rig “homemade” like the AP did in its article, but a Swiss man has successfully rocketed across the English Channel using a single jet-propelled fixed wing. The picture of him flying looks like a Buzz Lightyear action figure.
