Blah, I’m tired

I had high hopes of recapping our weekend tonight, but I suddenly find myself very tired. And our weekend wasn’t terribly interesting.

The highlight of the weekend (I guess) was taking our annual family photos. This is the first time we’ve had to do it with two kids and it kind of like herding cats. The Girl was more interested in her feet and the props than the camera to be honest. When she happened to randomly look at the camera, The Boy was of course picking his nose or staring at the ceiling.

The Wife thinks that the photographer probably got a couple of good shots, but I’m not convinced that she did. Oh well, at least there wasn’t any crying involved. Well, there wasn’t any at the photo shoot itself – The Boy did get a little emotional about having to wear his brown shoes.

Other than that, we just kind of laid low and tried to recharge. The Boy played a ridiculous amount of Zoo Tycoon, The Girl continued to work on crawling and playing the four-key piano and The Wife and I tried to grab naps whenever possible. We also ran to Sam’s on Sunday afternoon to purchase formula and frozen chicken in bulk quantities. Woo freaking hoo.

Not exactly like a fish in the water

Swimming lessonsOver the past two weeks, The Boy took his first swimming lessons at one of the city pools. Well, the term “swimming lessons” is kind of a stretch. It was basically a two week course in getting used to the water and learning that getting your face wet won’t kill you. They worked on floating and some kicking, but I don’t think I ever saw anything that even remotely approached actual swimming.

The Boy, as usual, was slow to warm up to the whole process and the first two or three days were pretty dicey. But then he got into it and actually went under water and kicked his way around the pool. I’m not under any delusions that he’d be able to save himself if he fell in the water tomorrow, but I thought it was a pretty good session for him and set the foundation for more productive lessons later on. Plus, he enjoyed the freaky frog slide.

But then came the final day – “fun day” – where they just play and basically do nothing that they’ve done for the previous two weeks. For my little creature of habit, that just wouldn’t do. Basically, he shut down and refused to participate in all of the fun but unfamiliar activities going on. Of course, this was the one day that The Wife came to watch him at swimming lessons, so she’s convinced that the whole thing was a waste. Alas, if only they had stuck to the normal routine.

Seven years later…

My friends, getting drunkI’ve finally scanned in all of our remaining wedding photos, including some of the candid ones people took using the disposable cameras on the tables at the reception. Upon looking back at those, The Wife and I realized that there were a lot of people at our wedding that neither one of us knew. Mystery guests, I hope you had a good time.

There’s also a whole bunch of regular wedding photos too. You know, cakes, dancing, kissing, etc…

Oh…the stories I have about swimming lessons! I’m willing to bet he learned more than it looked like. It’s just that until the 3rd level or so, they don’t get put together into any kind of recognizable stroke. At least he got in the water, I’ve held entire sessions where one kid refused to even stick a toe in the water. Then Mom was all “Why didn’t my kid pass?”

Yeah, on the whole, he did a lot better than I expected.

And much better than I did. I was always the kid who sank like a rock. I think I ended up taking beginners four times, advanced beginners twice, intermediate once (not sure what happened) and advanced twice.

That is a freaky slide! “hi mom i’m being thrown up by a frog”, oh well, he likes it and it gets him in the water. I think we need swimming lessons for our dog. He’s a lab mix but cannot stand water. I’m sure lessons for dogs exist, but I doubt I’ll even look into it.
