Trying to stay cool

Sometime around noon today, I started to really miss The Boy, who’s still got another week to go before he returns to us from his grandparents. Not sure why, but I guess without work to distract me I had time to realize how much empty time there is in my day without him around.

I also realized two other things today. First of all, with The Boy gone, I’m surrounded by womenfolk in the house. Even The Dog and The Cat are double-Xers, chromosomically speaking. And also, it’s very hot outside.

It’s actually not that hot outside. I think it only got into the low 90s today. It just seems so hot because we’ve had a lot of mild weather so far this year. By the time August rolls around and we’re consistently hitting triple digits, today’s weather will seem like a cool spring day.

Splish splash!Since it was so (relatively) hot, we decided that today would be a good day to introduce The Girl to the wonderful world of plastic pools. Man, I loved back yard plastic pools as a kid. Good times.

Anyway, The Girl was a bit hesitant at first, but she soon got into the spirit of things. After a few minutes, she was splashing up a storm, getting herself and her mother quite wet. Unlike The Boy, who absolutely cannot stand to get his face wet (a trait he may have inherited from me), The Girl didn’t seem to mind the water. In fact, she reveled in it.

It’s been an up and down weekend for The Girl. Today was pretty good, but last night was a real bear. I don’t know if she was teething, constipated or just plain cranky, but whatever the problem was, she didn’t feel like sleeping. After The Wife and I battled with her into the wee hours of the morning, I ended up just holding her on the couch from about 2:00 a.m. until sunrise.

That actually worked out okay for me because one of my favorite movies of all time was on at 5 a.m. – Grosse Pointe Blank. There’s nothing about that movie that isn’t great. Unfortunately, they followed it up with some crappy movie that I can’t even remember now. Oh well, guess you can’t win them all.

More weekend fun

I spent a good part of the weekend continuing to archive our old photos online. For those of you who still care, I give you the year 2006. There’s a lot of photos there, but not as many as the last update. Even I must sleep sometime.

When I wasn’t archiving photos, I was doing dumb things like mowing the lawn in the hot, hot sun and nearly setting our house on fire with our new grill. We got a cast iron grill and I decided to try it out tonight, ignoring the gale force winds we’ve been having in the evenings. Once I finally got the fire lit – well, I had to put it out pretty quickly. Let’s just say the wind was making the flames shoot out in a way that made me uncomfortable. I blame all the brain cells I fried while mowing the lawn.

The Dog spent her time lying around and being generally worthless. The Wife went shopping a couple of times. Not sure what The Cat did. Or even if The Cat is still alive. Haven’t seen her in a while now that I think about it.

Oh! I also made up a great song about The Girl’s little stuffed Ernie doll that infuriates The Wife. Even better, The Girl loves it and this morning the only thing that would calm her down was me singing it. I can’t even begin to describe the song. Just know that it’s about unrequited love and in my head it’s being sung by Aaron Neville backed up by a gospel choir. Yeah, it’s that awesome.

Your posts as of late have been a great reminder as to why I’m considering never ever ever having another baby. I heart sleep.

I can describe the song. Wildly inappropriate and offensive to a number of different social groups. Also frustratingly catchy.

Although I will admit it is probably inappropriate to be singing around children, it’s not offensive. Just listen to the lyrics in your head. I’ve made no horrible statements or moral judgments. It just lays the facts out there.
