One wedding and no funerals

The Wife and I packed up the young ‘uns for another weekend road trip on Saturday. This time, the kids were left in the Swamp while The Wife and I went to a wedding on the fairly acceptable island of Galveston.

When I was younger, I really disliked Galveston. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I don’t like the beach. Or because it took an hour to get there. But now I think it’s okay.

Galveston won’t ever be mistaken for a tropical resort island or even a decent place to take a vacation that lasts longer than 48 hours, but it’s got a funky little personality and just enough history to keep it interesting. I don’t mind running down there for the weekend now. In fact, our trip this weekend made me wish The Wife and I had done so more often before we had kids to tie us down.

Anyway, the wedding was superamazingfantabulous. One of our mutual friends from high school (who is much closer friends with The Wife, but aren’t they all?) tied the knot with a fellow she met in England and lured back here to hot, sticky, uncultured Texas. We had an opportunity to meet the groom a few years ago when we were in London and I really like him. I know they’ll be happy for a long, long time.

The wedding itself was held in a beautiful church that I didn’t take pictures of because I left the camera in the car. It was nice, I promise. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the page on their web site dedicated just to their stained glass windows.

The reception (of which I did take pictures) was held at the swanky Hotel Galvez and featured a sit-down meal and an open bar. I guesstimate it probably cost about as much as my house. None handed me a bill, however, so I had a great time.

The Wife also had a great time, particularly with the open bar. She had a chance to reconnect with some friends, hang out with the bride and then show her stuff on the dance floor. Since I have a tragic dearth of dancing ability, I occupied my time by taking photos: standard wedding photos, bad wedding photos and one that turned out kinda psychedelic. Not sure how that happened.

But then, the clock struck 11:00 and we had to return back to realities of every day married life. You know, diapers and day care and work and stuff.

A lil’ prognosticating

With all the gushing I did yesterday about the return of baseball, I forgot to give my predictions for who will make the postseason this year. So that I can look back in October and be amazed by my idiocy, I’ll record them here now for all posterity:

  • AL East: Boston Red Sox
  • AL Central: Detroit Tigers
  • AL West: Los Angeles Angels
  • AL Wild Card: Cleveland Indians
  • NL East: Atlanta Braves
  • NL Central: Chicago Cubs
  • NL West: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • NL Wild Card: New York Mets

And for my beloved Astros, I’m guessing they’ll end up somewhere around 79-83. Actually, I’d be shocked if they ended up doing that well. Low 70s is more likely for the W column this year. That’s okay. I miss the old days of being the only guy seated in my section.

Fries at the bottom of the bag

  • The Girl has been suffering from some congestion and general crankiness for the past couple of days. I hope she starts feeling better soon. I miss being able to sleep at night.
  • The construction behind our house continues, but there’s still no sign as to what exactly is going in.
  • It’s fun to watch what your big brother is doing, but sometimes it’s just too hard to stay awake.
  • I’d give anything to know what The Girl was thinking in this photo.
  • The Boy has taken to playing Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, which is fine with me. I still haven’t beaten that game.
  • Now that March is officially in the books, the March photo gallery is complete.
