SXSW: Day One

A big howdy to you from Austin, where I’m currently located as I attend SXSW Interactive 2008. It’s my first time to come to SXSW and I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can attend some interesting panels and get to meet some interesting folks over the next few days.

We don't need no stinkin badges!Today’s primarily just for registration, so there isn’t really much going on other than tons of people standing in line to get their convention badges. There are a couple of opening night parties going on, including some sort of mixer for higher-ed web types, so I’m about to go out and hit some of them. You know, since I’m such a big social animal and all.

Everything really kicks off tomorrow, so the only people with a booth set up today was Microsoft, but at least they had Guitar Hero III available for folks to play. Honestly, the highlights so far have been the scary barbecue place I saw on the side of the road outside Austin and the funky mini-La-Z-Boy chair in my hotel room. But that all changes tomorrow when things really get rolling. Or perhaps tonight when the social events kick off.

A little reminder that it’s still technically winter

We were surprised this morning by some snow flurries – something that’s rarity around here any day of the year, much less in March. Of course, none of it stuck to the ground, but it did flurry pretty decently for about 45 minutes. A tiny bit even managed to accumulate on the fence in our backyard.

Then the sun came out and all traces of it were gone in about twelve seconds. Not exactly like the St. Patrick’s Day blizzard we experienced when we lived in Denver.

Fries at the bottom of the bag

  • I’m not usually inclined to try recipes from a label, but The Wife made a chicken dish she found on jar of picante sauce the other night. And despite the fact that it looked totally gross, it actually tasted great. I may have to reconsider my policy on product label recipes.
  • The Girl has become very insistent about trying to sit up and stand. Meanwhile, The Boy has been trying to unlock the mysteries of his old Baby Björn.
  • We’ve all seen newer school buses with the tops painted white. Apparently, UPS has started doing it too with their delivery trucks, although in a fashion that can only be described as lame.
