Yule blog

Hey, it’s Christmas! Merry Christmas to everyone!

We had an extremely laid-back, no fuss kind of day today. In fact, all three of us managed to stay in our pajamas all day long. Also, no babies appeared today. That helps keep things low key.

Crazy about ChristmasLast night, we made some cookies for Santa, then we drove around and looked at Christmas lights for about an hour. I had a hard time telling if The Boy was impressed with the displays or not. He seemed to be mostly preoccupied with informing me that I was “missing” every street we didn’t go down. He’s hard to please sometimes.

Upon returning home, The Boy had just enough time to write a quick note to Santa, sample his cookies, set them out for the big guy and kiss his unborn sister good night before hitting the sack. He then managed to sleep throughout the night without getting up once, no doubt due to the stern warning I gave him about Santa knowing whether he’d be awake or not.

This morning, he woke up at a fairly decent time (7:00 a.m.) and we did the whole present thing. For the third “Christmas” this year, The Boy made out like a bandit. He spent the rest of his day playing with some of his new loot and generally being pretty agreeable. I think all that PEZ he found in his stocking kept him in a sugar-induced semi-coma for most the day.

The afternoon without a Christmas

Like I said – no baby today. But The Wife did start exhibiting some odd behavior that might indicate the very, very early stages of labor.

First of all, at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, The Wife officially declared Christmas over. The nativity scene was put back in the box. The mantle decorations and all the cards we received were stowed. The door-sized “Decembear” advent calendar was rolled up and boxed up until next year. After some haggling, I was able to convince her to leave the tree up.

Cooking up troubleThen, one hour later, I found her in the kitchen busily mixing something up. Apparently the urge to bake a cake struck her. Except we didn’t really have any of the necessary ingredients.

That didn’t stop her. She ended up crafting a makeshift cake by modifying an already dubious “four ingredient” recipe she had. It looked okay, but quite frankly it tasted kinda weird.

Well, in any case, the final doctor’s appointment is slated for tomorrow morning. Since things don’t seem to be imminent on their own, it looks like we’ll be headed to the hospital some time tomorrow evening or the following morning.

I’m somewhat relieved to have dodged the Christmas Day birthday bullet. So is The Boy – he already has three birthdays to keep up with on Christmas (those three being Jesus, The Dog, and according to him at least, Santa Claus) and I don’t think he could handle a fourth.

Bah, humbug

Television today really sucked. I was bummed to see that most of the channels just stuck with their regular programming throughout the day. There’s nothing jolly about watching Days of Our Lives or Judge Maria Lopez.

Of course, the only thing I was looking forward to watching today – Jeopardy! – was pretty much the only thing preempted by some holiday programming. Some weird figure skating special featuring D-list celebrities.

How many freaking versions of A Christmas Carol do we need? Just in the past 48 hours, I’ve seen versions starring Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammer, George C. Scott, Mickey Mouse and the Muppets. (Of course, the Muppet one was the best.) Can’t we come up with something original instead of remaking the same classic over and over?

Of course, after seeing some of the original holiday garbage they’ve run out on ABC Family and Lifetime over the past couple of weeks, maybe a Kid n’ Play version of A Christmas Carol wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Worthless little sticker update

The Boy and I hit H-E-B yesterday afternoon one more time before they closed early for the holiday. He managed to get two stickers with a single Buddy Buck, but they only added up to five points.

30 more to go. We’ll be there first thing tomorrow morning when they open up again.
