An unexpected trip to the hospital

And now, as promised, an explanation as to just what in the heck has been going on for the past ten days or so.

Of course, there’s no reason why The Wife couldn’t have updated you all on what’s been going on. She has been sitting at home for most of the past week, doing absolutely nothing, much to her annoyance. But I digress.

Exactly two weeks ago yesterday, The Wife called me at work and let me know that she had been experiencing some unexpected and distressing pregnancy complications. After talking to the nurse at her doctor’s office, they advised her to head for the hospital, so off we went.

Basically, she got to spend the next two days in the hospital as the situation gradually and inexplicably resolved itself. I’m glad that it did, but we never really got a concrete answer as to what exactly was going on or the likelihood of it occurring again, which is kind of frustrating.

NurseThere were some nervous moments when it looked like a very premature delivery might be in the cards, but fortunately things settled down after the first 12 hours or so. The doctors were able to rule out a number of bad scenarios rather quickly, so we were left with a bit of puzzling, but hopefully ultimately insignificant medical mystery.

We got to meet nearly all the doctors in my wife’s OB/GYN practice (her doctor was on vacation that week). And all of the nurses in the Delivery and Labor department. And a very crusty old man who does ultrasounds for the hospital.

The Wife was poked at least four thousand times as the nurses took turns trying to get an IV in her. I got to listen to multiple people give birth in adjoining rooms as I tried to sleep in the wee hours of the morning. The Boy got to visit the hospital and hopefully overcome any fears he might have about the joint. Really, it served as a fairly nice dress rehearsal for the main event.

Then comes the waiting

After 48 hours and a couple of broth-based meals, The Wife was released and told to stay at home until she could meet with her doctor the following Monday.

At her doctor’s appointment, The Wife was told to stay at home and continue to rest for another eight days. She slept. She watched television. She did a whole lot of nothing. She certainly didn’t blog. Thankfully, no further complications developed.

At her second follow-up appointment yesterday, we got to see another ultrasound of The Baby and confirmed that she’s doing fine. The Wife was cleared to go back to work and did so immediately after the appointment. All is well again.

Collateral damage

Since The Wife got out of the hospital, I’ve been trying to catch up. I was slated to start a fairly major freelance project on the day that she went into the hospital. I originally had a seven-day window to build a corporate intranet site from the ground up. With all the excitement, that window shrank to four days. Consequently, I spent my birthday and several more days camped out in front of a computer working from early morning to late at night.

Plus, there’s the day job. Some catching up had to be done there as well. Things have been so hectic, I completely forgot about The Boy’s open house at his school the other evening. Oops.

I’m not complaining, though. I’m just glad things are back to normal and everything appears to be going great. I’d definitely prefer to wait two more months before our next trip to the hospital.

Well, after not posting for so long, I now have a backlog of things to write about. Maybe I’ll be able to hammer out some more updates over the next couple of nights. Possibly.
